RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) - The Diamond Run Mall is one step closer to its transformation into a Walmart Supercenter after receiving key regulatory approval.

The project received an approved demolition permit under Act 250 this month. Crews are expected to begin tearing down parts of the old K-Mart there soon.

Officials say this has been a long time coming amid recent issues of vandalism and trespassing at the vacant retail space.

“We’re a little bit excited that we’re going to have something that is redeveloped, an area that’s been blighted, that’s been a concern of ours because of the people who have been in there that have tried to break in and have broken in,” said Rutland Town Selectboard chair Mary Ashcro
