MARION, Kan. (KWCH) - A former police chief in Marion will go to trial in the case surrounding the 2023 raid on the community’s newspaper . Gideon Cody is charged with interference with the judicial process for actions he’s accused of that followed individual raids on the Marion County Record office and the homes of the newspaper’s publisher and the town’s vice mayor.
At the time of the raids, Cody claimed he had evidence that the newspaper, Marion County Record reporter Phyllis Zorn and Marion Vice Mayor Ruth Herbal committed identity theft or other computer crimes to obtain information about Newell’s driving record. However, his targets stated that they engaged in no illegal activity, and no charges were ever filed against them.
Additionally, prosecutors said that Cody ordered Newe
