TEMPE, Ariz — A fast-moving microburst left days’ worth of cleanup across the city of Tempe.

Now, on day three of recovery, homeowners are weighing the costs of making repairs themselves or hiring a company to do it for them.

“Thank God I bought a brand-new chainsaw three days prior,” Scott Hudspeth said.

Hudspeth’s block in the Maple-Ash neighborhood suffered some of the worst damage, as heavy trees were ripped out of the ground and landed on homes and in yards.

“A lot of people were crying in the streets. A lot of cars crushed. It was like a nuclear bomb went off,” Hudspeth said.

Hudspeth’s tree landed on his neighbor’s roof. He’s cutting it down and repairing damaged parts of his home to avoid paying a hefty bill.
