The Executive Council narrowly approved a $28.5 million contract to demolish the General Sullivan Bridge straddling Little Bay between Dover and Newington after State Transportation Commissioner Bill Cass said any further delay could pose a serious hazard for the boating public.

Cass also said if it didn’t move forward, the state could lose faith with the contracting community because it would require a fourth attempt to competitively bid the work to demolish the bridge, which was deemed unsafe and closed as a pedestrian and bicycle crossing back in 2018.

Executive Councilor John Stephen, R-Manchester, had tried to table the contract arguing that it’s part of the 10-year highway program and the council is amid hearings over the next installment of that program to cover 2027-36.
