REDDING, Calif. - The Shasta County District Attorney's Office says that the Burney man who attacked his elderly mother with a hammer has been found incompetent to stand trial.

On September 16, the defense for 28-year-old Victor Sage Kersten of Burney questioned his mental competency to stand trial.

The court paused criminal proceedings to allow for an evaluation by two doctors. On Tuesday, the court determined Kersten was not competent to stand trial based on the doctors' reports.

The Shasta County District Attorney's Office says that Kersten will now undergo treatment, and if his competency is restored, the trial against him will continue.

Kersten is set for a placement report hearing on November 4, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. in Department 24.
