RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond Public Schools is bracing for significant changes to Standards of Learning test scoring that could dramatically impact student pass rates across the district.

School leaders gathered with parents and staff Wednesday night at MLK Jr. Middle School to discuss new SOL passing scores mandated by the Virginia Department of Education. The VDOE voted unanimously last month to increase proficiency scores as early as this school year.

“Please do not make adult problems children’s stress,” school leaders told families and staff. “Our job is to believe in our children.”

Currently, students in grades 3-12 need at least 400 points to pass SOL tests. Under the new mandate, students will need between 30 and 79 additional points, depending on grade level and subject matt
