ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A new safe haven baby box is coming to North County — and it’s the first of its kind in the area.

Gabrielle Kohlmann with the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District is leading the effort to bring the box to Fire House 1. She says the goal is simple — to provide a safe, anonymous option for parents in crisis.

“The last thing you want to hear on the news or word of mouth, this baby was surrendered in the snow, or the heat and something happened,” Kohlmann said. “We want to make sure there’s a safe place and safe environment for this child to be surrendered.”

Kohlmann, a new hire with the district and a mom herself, says the idea came from the Mehlville Fire Protection District — home to Missouri’s first baby box.
