Motorcyclists have been warned that falling behind during a group ride won't kill them, but trying to keep up might.

One in five motorcyclist deaths in Victoria were during group rides, with three-quarters of these fatalities happening on regional roads, police data found.

Motorcycle group rides are outings where multiple bikers travel in tandem. These rides range from casual trips with friends to large events such as charity rides .

Bendigo, Wodonga and Wangaratta were group rider crash hotspots, only beaten by Gippsland, the Goulburn Valley region and the Mitchell Shire.

Road Policing Acting Assistant Commissioner David Byrt said the potential risks of riding in group dynamics were underappreciated.
