The Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Repeal Bill has passed the lower house of NSW parliament, closing the curtain on a years-long environmental battle.
The Bill, which passed on Thursday with support from Labor and the Liberals, seeks to roll back protections for wild horses in Kosciuszko National Park.
The protections enshrined in the “Brumby Bill” were introduced by former Coalition minister John Barilaro.
Moments before the Bill repealing passed, its architect, independent Joe McGirr, thanked fellow MPs for their support.
“Just in summary, the key point is that this was a Bill that elevated a feral species and gave it a special form of protection at the detriment of an icon, treasure of our nation – the Kosciuszko National Park,” Mr McGirr said.
