RAPID RIVER — A fast start set the tone for the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears in a 3-1 (25-15, 25-13, 23-25, 25-17) volleyball triumph over the Rapid River Rockets here Tuesday night.

Big Bay grabbed an 8-1 lead in the opener on a service ace by junior Payton Pederson.

Rapid River trimmed its deficit to 9-4 on kill by senior defensive specialist Aubrey Olson.

The Black Bears (12-3) got a sideout on a kill by sophomore Cali Miller and senior Caraghan Thill followed with a five-point service run, extending their lead to 15-4.

Rapid River (3-10) trailed 19-6 after a net violation before shaving its deficit to 23-14 on a hitting miscue by the Black Bears.

The Rockets then committed service and passing errors, enabling the Black Bears to clinch the first set.
