If the late great Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel saw Washington and Harrisburg these days, he’d likely ask what he asked in 1962 when his New York Mets had 40 wins and 120 losses: “Can’t anybody here play this game?”
With baseball in the air and government sucking air, it’s a timely question, one that seems to be answering itself. Washington “leaders” shut down the federal government. Harrisburg “leaders” lead the only state in the nation without a budget for the new fiscal year.
In Washington, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson raised the prospect of “one of the l ongest shutdowns in American history,” hanging the fault on Democrats. In Harrisburg, Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro said , “It is ridiculous that the (GOP) Senate can’t get its act together and pass a budget.”
