Edward Saddler is still seeking answers nearly six months after his 3-year-old bulldog, Poet, died during an encounter with animal control officials in Salem County.

Salem City’s animal control officer and a humane law enforcement officer responded to Saddler’s Walnut Street residence on the morning of April 24 after receiving a report from a neighbor who said she was bitten by the dog, Saddler said.

Body camera video of the incident showed an officer restraining the dog with a catch pole, a device used to capture and restrain animals, and dragging it across Saddler’s yard before Poet stopped moving.

The case drew widespread attention on social media and demands for an investigation.
