CUMBERLAND – The nation’s 250th anniversary is next year, and towns across the country, including this one, are preparing their own version of a big celebration.

To kick things off, the town is hosting a photography contest, said local organizer Joyce Hindle Koutsogiane, but there will be much more to come.

Sarah King, of Mayor Jeff Mutter’s office, is calling all photographers. On July 4 of next year, the country will celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Cumberland is planning a full year of events to mark the occasion, she said.

They’re kicking it off with the photo contest, she said in an announcement, and they want residents to be part of it.
