MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Dane County Parks is celebrating the opening of a more than 900-acre wildlife area Thursday in the southwestern area of the county.

The Sugar River Wildlife Area, located in Verona and Montrose Townships, includes wetlands, woodlands, prairies and crop fields. A diverse range of wildlife can be found in the more than a mile-and-a-half stretch of the Sugar River and Badger Mill Creek.

Dane Co. Parks said visitors may enjoy hiking, snowshoeing or paddling along the Sugar River. People can also expect to find waterfowl, deer and turkey for hunting, as well as trout for fishing.

Dane County Executive Melissa Agard said she is excited as the park opens to the public.
