Pennsylvania’s 10 state-owned universities have requested a 5% increase in their 2026 state appropriation as they still wait on lawmakers to approve their 2025 funds.

A 5% uptick in funding would help these schools freeze tuition for next year’s students, recently appointed Chancellor Christopher Fiorentino said during Thursday’s Board of Governors meeting.

This year, annual tuition is nearly $8,000 for in-state students — a 3.6% increase from the previous seven years of flat tuition.

Board chair Cynthia Shapira said the 2026 request reflects the state system’s commitment to its students.

“This request maintains our consistent and firm commitment to hold tuition flat,” Ms. Shapira said. “It speaks to our mission.”
