A Texas zoo has released 28 horned lizards back into the wild.

The San Antonio zoo says 28 hatchlings were born from June through August, Twenty-three were born at San Antonio Zoo, and five at Zoo Miami.

This lizard, shown in the video burrowing into the sand, along with the 27 others were released into the native landscape Wednesday as part of the Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project.

The zoo says the lizards are a native species to Texas, but their populations have declined due to habitat loss and invasive fire ants.

The reptiles, often called “horny toads,” hatch ready to take on the world-fully independent from day one. They immediately start foraging on tiny insects, their favorite snack being ants.
