The National Hurricane Center on Thursday began tracking a tropical wave over the tropical central Atlantic that has potential to develop as it moves toward the central Caribbean.

The NHC said in its 2 p.m. advisory that the wave is expected to move west at 15-20 mph over the the next several days.

“Some slow development of this system is possible when it reaches the central portion of the Caribbean Sea by the middle part of next week,” forecasters said.

The NHC gave the system a 20% chance to develop within seven days.

Of the 12 named storms this year, four have grown into hurricanes, and three of those became major hurricanes.

Only one, Tropical Storm Chantal, made a U.S. landfall this year.

Hurricane season runs from June 1-Nov. 30.
