A box jellyfish advisory has been issued for beaches at Waikiki and Maili beaches today.

Honolulu Ocean Safety issued the alert via HNL Alert at about 8:30 a.m. today after box jellyfish were observed at the Waikiki and Maili shorelines.

The box jellyfish, also known as box jellies, can leave painful stings upon contact.

The public should always check with a lifeguard for the latest beach and ocean conditions, the alert said. In an emergency, call 911.

The public can sign up for HNL Alerts by visiting hnlalert.gov or texting “HNLALERT” to 888777 to subscribe to the most important safety alerts.
