KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Thursday, the City of Kansas City approved an ordinance authorizing a temporary modular jail facility ahead of the FIFA World Cup matches in Kansas City next year.
While the permanent city jail off 40 Highway next to Jackson County's new facility isn't set to open until 2029, the city has been hopeful to get a new jail operational in seven months. The jail will go in the city's tow lot off Front Street, just east of I-435. Reports show that it will cost about $20 million with around 100 beds.
The ordinance approves the design and construction of the facility, which "represents an important step toward addressing the city's longstanding detention and rehabilitation needs," the city said in a news release.
