KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A new 100-bed temporary jail is expected to cost taxpayers up to $22 million after city approval, despite concerns that plans may have been rushed.

On Thursday afternoon, Oct. 16, Kansas City Commissioners announced that they have authorized the design and construction of a new temporary jail.

Council members said the decision addresses longstanding detention and rehabilitation needs. The City has not operated its own jail since 2009.

Currently, commissioners indicated that those taken into custody are usually sent to Vernon or Johnson Counties - an arrangement that has been called impractical and expensive.
