JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Health officials at Johnson City and Kingsport City Schools expect to see absences spike as flu season approaches.

While neither system has seen an increase yet, Johnson City Schools Health Coordinator Jennifer Norton said schools usually see a spike after seasonal breaks and expect an influx as kids return from fall break and flu season arrives.

Norton said that November through January is when schools have their "highest volume of illness." She said parents should consider keeping their kids home if they are experiencing symptoms.

"It's fever, cough, congestion, sore throat, vomiting," Norton said. "Some of the little ones just overall don't feel well, or they're not their normal. They're not at their baseline, a little bit more subdued, a little bit more
