PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Former University of Portland basketball player Erik Spoelstra was named head coach of the USA Basketball Men's National Team through 2028.
Spoelstra is a Portland native, graduated from Jesuit High School, and played for the Pilots from 1988 to 1992. He has most recently been an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics and helping the team win a gold medal.
Spoelstra will be tasked with leading USA men's basketball during the 2027 FIBA Men's World Cup in Qatar and at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
