The Lincoln Children's Zoo announced the birth of a Matschie’s tree kangaroo.

The joey was born April 12, 2025, to mom, Judie, and dad, Bexley.

The zoo said at birth, the Matschie’s tree kangaroos are about the size of a lima bean, and then they "blindly crawl" into their mother's pouch. There they will continue to grow, popping their heads out of the pouch around 23 weeks old.

The joey is about 26 weeks old, so it's too early to tell its sex.

Matschie’s tree kangaroos are on the endangered species list with a "very high risk of extinction in the wild."

These types of kangaroos are found on the Huon Peninsula of Papua New Guinea.
