TOLEDO, Ohio — About two years ago, city and state leaders hailed the opening of the Mobis EV Battery Plant in north Toledo as a major milestone for the region’s auto industry.

The $65 million facility created 185 jobs and was part of a broader investment push to position Toledo as a hub for electric vehicle production.

"Companies now have a reason to stay in the same communities where they've been for years and help workers transition to build the cars of the future," said now-former U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm back in July 2024 during a tour of the plant.

But today, that vision faces new uncertainty as major automakers shift gears away from electric vehicles and toward more traditional models.
