A Taunton man was sentenced Wednesday to 8 to 10 years in state prison for throwing bags of drugs out the sunroof of his car, striking a state police cruiser, as he sped down a highway, prosecutors said.

The trooper later collapsed and needed Narcan, the opioid reversal drug, to be revived, according to a statement from District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III.

Leonard Vargus, 51, pleaded guilty in Bristol Superior Court to drug, assault, and reckless driving charges, for which he received varying prison terms, according the statement.

He was charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, meth, and cocaine, to be served after finishing a 3 to 4 year prison term in Suffolk County for unrelated drug charges, the statement said.
