John, 26, formerly of Carleton, was a 2016 graduate of Monroe's St. Mary Catholic Central High School . He attended St. Stephen and St. Patrick Catholic schools as a child.

“He was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. He went into the hospital Aug. 10,” said Lisa McGrath, John's mom.

John died Aug. 24, before he could have his first treatment.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer.

“By stage 4, the cancer has spread beyond the skin to other organs,” according to Mayo Clinic .
