Prominent venture capitalist Ron Conway resigned from the board of Salesforce’s philanthropic arm Thursday in response to company CEO Marc Benioff saying last week he wanted the National Guard to come to San Francisco, according to The New York Times .

Conway, a close Benioff friend for more than 25 years, told the co-founder of The City’s largest private employer in a “fiery” email that their values were no longer aligned, the Times reported.

“It saddens me immensely to say that with your recent comments, and failure to understand their impact, I now barely recognize the person I have so long admired,” Conway, a major Democratic donor, wrote to Mr. Benioff, according to the Times.

Conway did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Examiner.
