Punjab’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, Harcharan Singh Bhullar, was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Friday after being caught red-handed accepting Rs 8 lakh from a scrap dealer in exchange for settling a case and ensuring no police action against his business.
The complainant had been summoned to Bhullar’s Mohali office for the first instalment when the CBI swooped in on Thursday. A middleman, Kirshanu, linked to the DIG, was also arrested.
According to the complainant, Bhullar, through his middleman Krishanu, demanded a bribe to "settle" an FIR. Bhullar allegedly also sought monthly payments ("sewa-paani") and threatened to falsely implicate the complainant in criminal cases if the payments were not made, the complaint further stated.
