COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Tennessee Department of Transportation crews are continuing to repair the section of I-40 in Cocke County that was washed out during Hurricane Helene. The agency recently shared information on how large steel boxes will help make those repairs happen.

On Monday, TDOT shared a video on social media of Regional Communications Officer for East Tennessee Mark Nagi answering a follower's question of "What's up with the big steel boxes on I-40?”

Nagi explained that to make the repairs to the eastbound lanes of I-40 that washed out during Hurricane Helene, crews will need to use quite a few building blocks, which have the technical name of "sacrificial trench boxes." The steel boxes are 12 feet tall, 30 feet long and four-and-a-half feet wide. • (TDOT) • (TDOT)
