The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday ordered a judicial inquiry into the violence that took place in Leh on 24 September. Retired Supreme Court Judge Justice B.S. Chauhan has been entrusted with conducting a fair investigation. The inquiry committee will examine the police action and the causes behind the deaths of four people.
On 24 September, the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance had held protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for the region. During the demonstrations, clashes broke out between security forces and protesters, resulting in four deaths and around 90 injuries.
