WASHINGTON — OpenAI has halted the ability to generate videos of Martin Luther King Jr. on its AI video platform , following backlash over offensive deepfake content featuring the civil rights icon.

The move comes after Dr. King’s family called out disrespectful and racist AI depictions of King spreading across the internet. In a posted to X, OpenAI acknowledged the issue and said it has worked with the King Estate to address their concerns.

“Some users generated disrespectful depictions of Dr. King’s image,” the company and King's estate wrote in a joint statement. “So at King, Inc.’s request, OpenAI has paused generations depicting Dr. King as it strengthens guardrails for historical figures.”
