Calgary police are investigating three fatal pedestrian collisions that occurred within a 24-hour period, which they describe as "entirely preventable." The first incident took place on Wednesday night when a man in his 40s was struck by a vehicle. The collision occurred around 9:20 p.m. at the intersection of International Avenue and 38th Street S.E. in Forest Lawn. The man was in a crosswalk when he was hit and later died at the hospital. The following morning, another pedestrian fatality was reported. A woman in her seventies was killed in a hit-and-run incident on Riverbend Drive S.E. at approximately 7:30 a.m. The driver fled the scene but later returned to turn himself in to authorities. The third fatality occurred on Thursday night at about 8:30 p.m. A woman in her eighties was crossing Woodpark Boulevard S.W. at the intersection of 117th Avenue S.W. when she was struck by a northbound 2016 Subaru BRZ driven by a 20-year-old man. The woman died at the scene, while the driver remained unharmed and stayed at the location. These incidents mark a troubling trend in Calgary, with the latest collision being the 30th fatal incident of the year, surpassing last year's ten-year high. It also represents the 11th pedestrian fatality in 2025. Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit expressed concern over the recent fatalities. "Over the last 24 hours, three people have lost their lives in collisions that are entirely preventable. This is a trend we cannot allow to continue," he said. Woodward emphasized the importance of vigilance as daylight hours decrease. He urged drivers to adjust their habits, drive according to road conditions, respect speed limits, and remain alert for pedestrians and other vehicles, especially near intersections.
