The gym can be an intimidating environment. With hefty lads dominating the weights section and mirrors capturing every blunder, it's sufficient to leave any fitness newcomer feeling as though they're being constantly watched.
Fitness enthusiast and editor Tom Capon felt much the same at first, but soon realised this common perception of gyms is way off the mark. The mirrors, he explains, aren’t for vanity at all – they’re there to help perfect form and technique between sets.
And those muscular types? More often than not, they’re the first to lend a helping hand. Tom remarked: "I've witnessed two of them rescue two blokes from a bench press mishap just this week (I was too engrossed in my own reflection). The real issue is not knowing where to begin."
