A 13-year-old girl has been placed on probation for her role in an arson at a Niagara Falls hotel.

The teen, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared in an Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines on Friday and pleaded guilty to a charge of arson.

“This was a hotel where dozens of people could be located and the potential for disaster was very profound,” Judge David Thomas said.

“Thankfully, the fire was able to be extinguished before it expanded beyond the washroom.”

The Grade 9 student, who had no prior criminal record, was placed on probation for two years and ordered not to have any contact with the co-defendants.

On Feb. 14, court heard, emergency crews were called to a hotel on Fallsview Boulevard in response to a fire call.
