Prime Minister Mark Carney toured the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls Friday, the same day his government announced new measures to secure Canada’s border.

Carney visited the international crossing and saw firsthand some of the advanced technology customs officers use on the job.

He was joined by several officials, including Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree and St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle.

After the tour, Anandasangaree held a news conference, where he announced the government’s plan to hire, train and deploy 1,000 new Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers.

He said that will involve spending $617.7 million over five years but didn’t say how many will be dedicated to Niagara’s four border crossings.
