WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on imported medium- and heavy-duty trucks, effective November 1. This move includes an exemption for vehicles that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Trucks that meet CUSMA standards will only face tariffs on their non-American components.
In addition to the truck tariffs, a 10% tariff will be applied to buses and motorcoaches. This decision follows Trump's previous threats to implement heavy truck tariffs, which he claims will protect American manufacturers from foreign competition.
The American Trucking Association has expressed strong opposition to the new tariffs. They warn that these levies could lead to increased prices in an industry already affected by existing steel tariffs. The association argues that the tariffs may further strain the trucking sector, which is vital to the U.S. economy.
