EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The poison control center says it receives a call for a child accidentally being exposed to medication every 15 seconds.

In a report last year, the U.S. Center for Poison Control estimated there were more than 68,000 emergency room visits nationwide for unintentional poisonings among children under 5 years old, an increase of about 6,000 from 2021.

The data also shows pediatric poisonings resulted in 98 fatalities in 2022, up from 59 the year before.

Dr. Rebecca Wingerter, a pediatric emergency medicine specialist with Brown University Health, joined 12 News at 4 on Friday to talk about how parents can keep their children safe.
