ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — The Elizabethtown Regional Airport is expanding amid booming industry in Hardin County.

The main terminal is under construction and crews are building additional hangars. The airport has also proposed to expand the runway, which would improve landing safety and accommodate larger planes.

"It’s about protecting the investment that’s already out here, also protecting how strategically located this field is for Fort Knox, for corporate travelers, for all of the industry built up around it," said Carl Swope, a pilot and chairman of the airport's board.

Swope said the regional airport is the jet fuel to local industry, employing 12,000 people in local industrial jobs.
