As always, your local firefighters care about your safety and want to make sure that you and your family are safe from the devastating effects of fire. During the month of October, firefighters throughout the country hold open houses and conduct school safety visits in conjunction with the Fire Prevention Week which is held annually to remind you of the dangers of fire while educating you on ways to prevent fires.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, a tragic fire in 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left more than 100,000 people homeless, and destroyed more than 17,400 structures spread over more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8th, but burned overnight and did most of its damage on October 9th.
