MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Fire Department responded Friday night to a fire at UnityPoint Health Meriter Hospital on South Park Street.

Crews were dispatched around 8:09 p.m. and found smoke on the fifth floor in a mechanical room, along with a fire on the roof outside the building, according to the department. Officials said the smoke inside was caused by the air handling system pulling in smoke from the fire. The flames did not penetrate the building.

The fire has since been extinguished, and no injuries were reported. Patients and hospital staff have returned to the building after a brief evacuation of the emergency department and sixth floor.

The Madison Fire Department's Fire Investigation Team is working to determine the cause of the fire.
