CLINTON, Iowa (KWQC) - Clinton was once known as the lumber capital of the world, and the Sawmill Museum on the banks of the Mississippi River keeps that history alive for visitors.

Museum director Andy Green said Clinton’s lumber roots go back over a century.

“The sawmill industry in Clinton was well over 100 years ago, and yet today you could still see it in all aspects of town, especially when you look at the houses,” Green said. “It’s really shaped industry here in Clinton and what are people doing, the jobs that they have, even if they don’t understand that was part of our history.”

The museum offers exhibits for both adults and children with hands-on learning opportunities about Clinton’s lumber industry.
