State pension sums are inching closer to the personal allowance threshold which could soon make retirees liable for income tax bills just by claiming their pension. This has prompted calls from retirees, campaign groups and ministers alike for the tax rules to change, for pensioners at least.

Independent MP James McMurdock asked the Treasury if it plans to review the Personal Allowance threshold and increase it in line with the level of state pension. The personal allowance has been frozen at £12,570 since 2021 and the Labour government has previously confirmed it plans to continue this freeze until April 2028.
