TOLEDO, Ohio — Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S., behind only lung cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and one Wood County woman hopes sharing her story will inspire others to take prevention seriously.

Michelle Babione knows the impact of breast cancer all too well.

“It started with my grandmother. We lost her back in ’94 with breast cancer. Then my mother was diagnosed,” Babione said.

Babione said her mother had one breast removed, but later developed another lump, which led to the removal of her other breast as well. After her mother’s second diagnosis, Babione decided to take a closer look at her own health.
