A serving British Transport Police officer has been convicted of drink-driving.

Pc Karl Palmer, 54, was found guilty of the offence after a a trial at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court.

The Sheffield-based officer was prosecuted after a vehicle he was driving crashed through a wall and was left precariously balancing 5ft above a road below.

It happened in the village of Blidworth in Nottinghamshire at 10.20pm on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Palmer told Nottinghamshire Police officers he believed the handbrake had failed causing the accident.

But a roadside breath test returned a reading of 68, almost double the legal limit. British Transport Police said Palmer had been on restricted duties since the incident. He is due to be sentenced on November 7.
