The City of Burlington will look at potentially eliminating development charges for two years to aid the struggling housing industry.
At its Oct. 14 meeting, council voted unanimously to direct the city’s commissioner of development and growth management to report back to the committee of the whole in January on a bylaw update that would temporarily eliminate development charges.
Development charges are fees developers are required to pay to municipalities to help pay for things like roads, transit, sewer systems, community facilities and other infrastructure related to growth.
In a delegation to council, Mike Collins-Williams, CEO of the West End Home Builders Association, explained just how desperate the situation has become for the housing industry.
“Across the Golden Horseshoe, the
