NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Fire Department responded to a one-alarm vehicle salvage yard fire on Friday, Oct. 17.

According to NOFD, smoke was reported in the area of 10300 block of Old Gentilly Rd. NOFD Around 1:35 p.m., NOFD Fire Operations personnel arrived on the scene of Car Crushers, a vehicle salvage yard.

NOFD reported that the fire involved an area of crushed and salvaged vehicles "almost as wide as a city block." According to NOFD, the dirt and gravel access roads in the yard and the positioning of fire apparatuses to surround the incident prohibited the likelihood of the fire extending to other areas of the facility.

At the fire's peak, the smoke plume from the site could be visible from across the city, according to NOFD.
