The San Francisco Giants are close to hiring their next manager — and he has no MLB experience.
Tennessee Volunteers head coach Tony Vitello is nearing a deal to take over the Giants’ dugout, The Athletic reported on Saturday.
Vitello, 47, led the Vols to the College World Series title in 2024, turning the program into a powerhouse after his arrival in 2017.
During his time at Rocky Top, Vitello has coached the likes of MLBers including AL Cy Young favourite Garrett Crochet. Previously, at Arkansas and elsewhere, he coached top players like longtime Texas Ranger Ian Kinsler and Toronto Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer.
Vitello has never coached or played in the majors.
