And with them Fred Scott and Lenny Pilot terrorised Manchester . In the late 70s and early 80s the pair were the city's most notorious and prolific armed robbers .
They put together a crew of hardened criminals who became known as the Crazy Face Gang, due to the macabre masks they wore on every job. Between 1979 and 1982 the use of guns in armed robberies in Greater Manchester quadrupled, with much of that increase down to them.
And their exploits would enrage Greater Manchester's then Chief Constable James Anderton so much it led to armed police being routinely deployed on the streets of the region for the first time. On the face of it Scott and Pilot were unlikely partners in crime.
