Australian zoos are grappling with a number of animal deaths with Adelaide the latest to mourn after a female monkey was euthanised due to a debilitating spinal condition.
Adelaide Zoo has announced the deaths of seven animals since October 2024, most dying from age-related issues including its only African lions, Mujambi and Amani.
Zoos Victoria , meanwhile, has lost eight animals, including a gorilla and a lion cub due to illness or injury.
On Thursday, Adelaide Zoo announced their last female mandrill, Niari, had been humanely euthanised having reached the “end of her natural life” after developing a spinal condition. She was 29 years old.
In August, an “iconic” member of Adelaide Zoo’s baboon troop, Chappi, was euthanised at 22 due to age-related health issues.
