NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder that early detection is the most powerful tool in fighting breast cancer. Doctors at Riverside Health System emphasize that regular mammograms, starting at age 40 for most women, are key to improving survival and treatment options.

“Detecting breast cancer isn’t just about feeling for lumps,” said Dr. Aaron Chevinsky, Director of Oncology for Riverside Health System and Riverside Cancer Care Network. “Often, the warning signs can be as subtle as changes in the appearance of your breasts, like puckering or asymmetry. This is why regular mammograms and self-checks are so important for early detection.”
